The U.S. Air Force is buying more of the C-127J SuperHercs, the military’s main transport for airlift missions and other special operations, for about $3.5 billion, according to a report in The Wall St Journal.
The C-131J is also part of the buy.
The C-129J is one of two jets that will be in the fleet.
The deal was announced in the Pentagon’s budget for fiscal year 2021, and it’s not yet clear whether the planes will be the first to join the fleet or the last.
The new aircrafts will be available from 2019, with delivery to the military by 2024.
The Air Force has about 1,300 of the jets in its fleet, and they have been used to transport troops to and from Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries.
The planes were also used to fly special operations forces.
