Korean state media reported on Friday that it has issued “severe and very severe” sanctions on the United States over its “cyberattack” on South Korea, and that it would “make a serious effort” to impose sanctions on American companies and firms operating in the country.
The report said Pyongyang is planning to “strike the US with the greatest possible consequences.”
The report did not say whether the sanctions would target the Trump administration.
South Korea said it was in touch with the United Nations over the issue.
North Korea said its “self-defense forces” conducted the cyberattack against the South.
The latest attack came amid heightened tensions over the North’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in has said the North will face “severe” and “severely severe” consequences if the United Kingdom or the United State fails to meet its obligations to reduce tensions.
