Military commanders have told The Globe and Mail that they will use every available weapon at their disposal to help Ukrainians fight the separatists, including artillery, drones, intelligence and special forces.
The US military has already used drones and drones-based air defence systems to help the Ukrainian military in its fight against the separatists.
But the United States has been reluctant to do more.
“It’s something that we haven’t done, but that’s not to say that it’s not something that is under consideration,” US Central Command spokesperson Lt.
Col. Michael P. Dempsey told The Times of Israel.
Dempsey said that the US military would use its best intelligence to “assist” the Ukrainian army in its battle against the separatist rebels.
The United States is not the only military power interested in supporting Ukraine’s efforts to defeat the separatists in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The European Union is also providing military assistance, including military hardware and training to Ukraine’s military.
A similar arrangement was recently extended to the Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, which are fighting against Kiev’s forces.
Dempsey was speaking after the UN Security Council approved an amendment to a UN resolution condemning the conflict in eastern and central Ukraine.
The amendment passed unanimously, with all 12 members of the council voting in favour.
The measure condemns the separatist attacks on Ukrainian soldiers in eastern regions and urges the international community to act quickly to help stop the violence.
“The resolution also calls for the international humanitarian community to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and to facilitate peaceful resolution of the conflict,” the UN resolution said.
“To that end, it also calls on all parties to adhere to their commitments under the Minsk Agreements.”
